The Science and Engineering Complex is designed to comply with the Harvard Green Building Standards, which is a set of process-oriented requirements that go above and beyond those of LEED certification.

Individuals in the building will be able to adjust temperature on a local scale, open windows, and turn off lights. Fresh air and daylight will be combined with intelligent programming to create multiple climate zones appropriate to space usage, which link occupants to natural environmental conditions and improve health, productivity, and well-being.

Occupied spaces are placed near facades whenever possible, while atriums and light courts allow daylight to penetrate into interior spaces. Automated controls will turn off lights when sufficient daylight is available.

Well-insulated, high-performance facades with engineered exterior shading strategies will maximize comfort at all times of year – blocking undesirable summer heat while letting in winter sunlight.

Laboratories can use ten times more energy than office or classroom spaces and are the major driver of the overall building energy use. State-of-the-art laboratory energy efficiency measures are included in the SEC design, such as dedicated outdoor air systems, high-performance heat recovery, and low-flow fumes hoods.

Key energy conservation strategies included in the project design include:

  • Increased access to natural daylight
  • Energy-efficient lighting systems and controls
  • Renewable energy systems (e.g., photovoltaic panels, solar thermal hot water system)
